Sam Houston State used an eight run third inning to rebound from Saturday’s loss and win the series-clincher, 14-4, over rival Stephen F. Austin. The Bearkats put up four more in the seventh to finish-off the Lumberjacks.

After being shutout Saturday the Bearkats (15-12, 4-2) took out some frustrations and exploded for eight runs in the third inning. It looked like the Kats were going to be sat down in order until center fielder Colt Atwood reached on error by the pitcher Cameron Gann with two outs.

Gann struggled with his control after the error. Atwood advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on another error by Gann. Second baseman Jessie Plumlee walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Shortstop Carter Burgess walked to load the bases.

Catcher Anthony Azar walked to drive in the first run of the game. Third baseman Kevin Miller singled to left to drive in two more runs and chase Gann out of the game. Reliever Kevin Bishop walked designated hitter Shea Pierce to reload the bases.

First baseman Spence Rahm singled to put two more runs on the board before left fielder Luke Plucheck put the exclamation point on the inning. The junior blasted a first-pitch, three-run homer to leftfield to make the score 8-0.

Caleb Smith pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing four runs on nine hits. Jason Simms relieved Smith with the bases loaded in the sixth and ended the inning with a strikeout of SFA’s leading hitter Hunter Dozier.

The Kats put SFA away with four runs in the seventh inning. Plucheck walked and right fielder Greg Olson singled. Colt Atwood put a bunt down and Plucheck scored from third. Plumlee singled to score Olson before Azar walked to load the bases. Miller and Pierce each walked to drive in the final two runs.

Plucheck was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Miller was 1-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Leadoff hitter Colt Atwood scored three runs while going 2-for-3 at the plate.

The Bearkats will play at the University of Houston Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. and host McNeese State for a weekend series.
