Catcher Anthony Azar drove in three runs to power Sam Houston past McNeese State 12-2 in seven innings. The win completes the Kats first three-game series sweep of the season.
The Bearkats (19-12, 7-2) trailed 2-0 after Caleb Smith struggled in the first inning. The junior lefthander settled down after the first and didn’t allow any other runs. He gave up just one earned run on three hits and four walks with two strikeouts.
Sam Houston plated three runs in the third inning on some shaky McNeese defense. Catcher Jessie Plumlee was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and shortstop Carter Burgess reached on an error when the first baseman dropped a popup in the infield.
Plumlee scored on a sacrifice fly from second base when Azar launched a fly ball to deep center. Cowboy center fielder Andrew Guillotte caught the ball and smashed into the wall allowing Plumlee to score from second.
Third baseman Kevin Miller singled and Burgess scored on an error when McNeese tried to throw out Miller advancing to second. Designated hitter Hayden Simerly doubled to drive in the third run of the inning.
The Kats would score three more in the fourth inning and added a single run in the fifth.
McNeese State would commit a third error in the bottom of the seventh inning to allow the Kats 12th run to score and end the game.
Alan Scott pitched the final two innings in relief for the Kats, allowing just one hit and striking out two.
Azar finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored. Miller was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Simerly was 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
The Bearkats will play Texas A&M Tuesday night in College Station.
