Fueled by a three-RBI day from Hayden Simerly, Sam Houston State took the final game of the series against Oral Roberts, 6-4.

The Bearkats (23-17, 9-6) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after one inning of play. Designated hitter Hayden Simerly singled to drive in center fielder Colt Atwood and catcher Anthony Azar for his first two RBI.

Oral Roberts tied the game back up in the top of the second after a leadoff walk and a single both came around to score. The Eagles took a 3-2 lead in the third inning on a two-out double by shortstop Nate Goro.

The fourth inning proved to be the game-decider. Shortstop Carter Burgess walked and moved to third on a single by first baseman Ryan O’Hearn. Right fielder Greg Olson dropped down a bunt and reached on an error by the first baseman, while Carter Burgess scored on the play.

Second baseman Jessie Plumlee doubled down the left field line to drive in two more runs and make the score 5-3.

Simerly added a solo homerun to the right-center gap to put the Bearkats up 6-3 in the fifth.

ORU would tack on one more run in the ninth inning but Michael Burchett came in to get the final two outs and register his fourth save of the season.

The Bearkats are back at Don Sanders Stadium Tuesday for “50 Cent Hotdog Night” against UT-Arlington. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
