The Bearkats rallied to score 11 runs in the final four innings to win 11-2 and take the series over Northwestern State. SHSU stays in a tie for first place in the Southland.
Sam Houston (26-17, 11-6) trailed 2-0 after five innings against the Demons before they scored one in the sixth, three in the seventh, two in the eighth, and five in the ninth inning.
Catcher Anthony Azar hit a solo homerun in the sixth inning to get the Kats on the board.
The Kats strung together four straight singles to take the lead in the seventh inning. Right fielder Romeo Cortina hit a single and second baseman Ryan Farney followed. First baseman Jessie Plumlee singled to score one and center fielder Colt Atwood got a base hit to drive in two more.
Third baseman Kevin Miller led off the eighth with a double and scored after an infield single by shortstop Carter Burgess and an error. Cortina singled to drive in Burgess and make the score 6-2.
Sam Houston put the game away with five runs in the ninth inning. Atwood and Azar led off the inning with doubles. Left fielder Luke Plucheck and Miller were hit by pitches to load the bases. Burgess hit a sacrifice fly to score a run and DH Hayden Simerly doubled to clear the bases. Cortina singled to drive in the fifth run of the inning.
Tyler Eppler started and pitched five innings allowing two runs on six hits. Cody Dickson pitched the final four innings in relief while allowing just one hit and one walk.
The Bearkats will go for the sweep Sunday at 1 p.m. in Natchitoches, La.
