Cody Dickson pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out seven to lead the Bearkats to a 4-1 win in the opening game against Southeastern Louisiana. The teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 11:45 a.m.

Sam Houston (32-17, 16-6) has now won ten games in a row and is in first place in the Southland Conference. The game was originally scheduled for Friday night but was postponed due to rain.

Dickson was making his first weekend start since struggling against Oral Roberts in April. The junior allowed just two hits and four walks in seven shutout innings on the mound.

The Bearkats opened the scoring with three runs in the fifth inning after left fielder Luke Plucheck led off with a single. SLU committed two errors in the inning to allow a run before first baseman Jessie Plumlee walked to load the bases. Center fielder Colt Atwood hit a two-RBI single to right field to score two runs and put the Kats up 3-0.

Plucheck hit a solo homerun to left field in the sixth inning to drive in all the runs the Bearkats would need. The homer was his eighth of the year, tying him for the team lead with Hayden Simerly.

Tyler Eppler came in to relieve Dickson in the eighth inning and allowed the only Lion run to score on a wild pitch.

Reliever Jason Simms pitched a scoreless ninth inning and picked up his eighth save of the season.
