A week after the Bearkats debuted in the national polls they have now moved up to their highest ranking ever at the Division I level, No. 18 in the Baseball America Poll. Last week was the earliest in the season that SHSU (13-3) had ever appeared in the national rankings.

The Kats dropped a midweek contest to ranked Rice last week, splitting the regular-season series, before sweeping Cal State Northridge at home over the weekend.

The Bearkats also moved up to No. 23 in the Perfect Game poll a week after debuting in the 25th spot. SHSU moved up to No. 24 in the NCBWA poll after entering at No. 28 last week. The USA Today Coaches poll dropped the Kats from the rankings after appearing at No. 24 last week, but they are the leader among teams receiving votes.

This week Texas-San Antonio makes the trip to Don Sanders Stadium for a game Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Kats will then hit the road for the Southland opener at New Orleans Friday through Sunday.

SHSU is batting .303 as a team and the pitching staff has compiled a 1.89 ERA. The Kats didn't allow an earned run in three games last weekend. Right fielder Hayden Simerly leads the way offensively with a .439 batting average, 12 RBI, and 10 runs scored.

The Roadrunners are 11-5 and have already picked up a pair of conference wins, winning two-of-three over Florida Atlantic last weekend. UTSA is hitting .289 as a team, led by right fielder John Welborn who is batting .417 in 15 games played. The Roadrunner pitching staff has an ERA of 2.46.

Tuesday's starting pitching matchup features SHSU righthander Ryan Brinley (2-0, 2.87 ERA) versus UTSA righty Boone Mokry (0-0, 3.86 ERA).
