Junior starting pitcher Tyler Eppler was named as the Southland’s Pitcher of the Week after tossing his first career complete game, a three-hit shutout against Cal State Northridge.
Eppler struck out one and walked just one in his nine-inning performance. The righthander induced 15 fly outs and nine groundouts while keeping his pitch count under 100.
“Coach Pierce always makes fun of me because I can’t get past the seventh inning but I was locating all of my pitches tonight and I was getting ahead a lot,” Eppler said following his complete game performance. “They’re a team that doesn’t like to strike out so I was just throwing quality pitches and letting them get themselves out.”
Friday’s complete game came just a week after shutting down the nationally ranked TCU Horned Frogs for six scoreless innings. Eppler improved to 3-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.48.
This week Texas-San Antonio makes the trip to Don Sanders Stadium for a game Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Kats will then hit the road for the Southland opener at New Orleans Friday through Sunday.
