Catcher Anthony Azar drove in eight total runs as the Bearkat baseball team completed the road sweep of New Orleans with a doubleheader win Saturday. Sam Houston (16-4, 3-0) beat UNO 14-4 in the first game and 7-2 in the second.

Azar hit a pair of home runs in the first game of the doubleheader. His first homer was a three-run shot in the third inning that tied the game 3-3 after the Kats had allowed three first-inning runs. His second was a grand slam in the eighth inning.

The Bearkats blew the tied game open with four runs in the sixth inning. The tie-breaking run came across on an RBI double by Shea Pierce that chased New Orleans starter Darron McKigney. Colt Atwood doubled in two more runs before Luke Plucheck singled to make the score 8-4.

Sam Odom tossed six innings and picked up his fourth win of the season. Seth Holbert tossed a perfect seventh inning with one strikeout and Dylan Ebbs pitched a scoreless final two frames.

The second game of Saturday’s doubleheader was tied 1-1 going to the seventh inning. The Bearkats loaded the bases before Colt Atwood flipped a single into left center to push the Bearkats ahead 3-1.

Sam Houston State added four runs in the ninth to put the game well out of reach and complete the sweep.  Colt Atwood and Ryan O’Hearn each drove in two runs in the second game of the doubleheader.

Dirk Masters picked up his first win of the season after he tossed seven innings while striking out six. Alan Scott pitched 1 1/3 innings before Jason Simms was asked to come out of the bullpen and get the final two outs.

The Bearkats will head next to Texas-Arlington for a single game Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. and will continue the road trip at Central Arkansas next weekend.
