Shortstop Corey Toups hit a pair of home runs behind Jason Simms’ solid start on the mound to lead Sam Houston (23-11, 7-6 SLC) to an 8-3 win over Abilene Christian at Don Sanders Stadium Friday. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 4:00 p.m.

After leaving several runners on base and scoring just one run through the first three innings, the Bearkats broke it open with five runs in the fourth.

Left fielder Luke Plucheck singled with one out and scored on a double by second baseman Shea Pierce. Toups hit his first homer of the game to plate two more runs. Catcher Anthony Azar kept the inning alive with a two-out single and scored when first baseman Ryan O’Hearn tripled to left center. O’Hearn made the score 6-0 when he scored on a wild pitch.

Bearkat starter Jason Simms allowed just one base runner to get past first base through the first eight innings of the game.

The Wildcats scored three runs in the ninth inning when Simms loaded the bases with no outs. Reliever Alex Bisacca allowed one hit and one walk but finished the game.

Toups finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Azar, Colt Atwood, Carter Burgess and Hayden Simerly each had two hits.

Tyler Eppler gets the start for Sam Houston in game two of the series and Sam Odom will start the series finale Saturday night.
