The victory extended Sam Houston's winning streak to six games. The contest was the second game of the Henson Family Dealership / First National Bank of Huntsville Baseball Invitational. Michigan defeated Massachusetts 5-2 in the first game Friday.
Shelton (2-0) spread six hits over five and two thirds innings, facing 27 batters. Daniel Nottebart pitched two-and-a-third innings and Michael Hilliard saw one inning of action in relief.
Four other batters posted multiple hit nights as shortstop Braeden Riley, first baseman Chris Andreas, right fielder Greg Olson and catcher Kyle Singleton each totaled a pair of hits.
Center fielder Mark Hudson had an RBI triple and Riley and Olson each hit doubles.
The tournament continues Saturday with Michigan and UMass meeting at 1:30 p.m. and UMass facing the Bearkats at 6:30 p.m.
