Designated hitter Chris Andreas became the second Sam Houston baseball player ever to blast two grand slam home runs in one season Wednesday as he powered the Bearkats to a 13-7 non-conference victory over Prairie View A&M at Don Sanders Stadium.

Andreas, whose first 2011 grand slam came on Feb. 26 in a victory over Nebraska, smacked a bases loaded shot over the 375 sign in right field in the fifth inning.

Tyler Knight, who posted grand slams against the University of Houston and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in 2009, was the first Bearkat to achieve the feat.

Shortstop Braeden Riley also reached a Bearkat record book plateau with three hits to pass Richard Johnson for third place on the all-time total hits list. Johnson totaled 247 hits, playing from 1982 to 1985.

Riley, in his fourth season as a starter, has totaled 248 hits in  171 games. He needs six more hits to pass Kelly Eddlemon (255 hits in 1997-2000) for second place in the career standings. Terry Pirtle (1984-87) holds the school record for total career hits with 271.

Sam Houston scored its 13 runs on 12 hits and four Panther errors. The victory upped the Bearkats to 14-8 for the year while Prairie View dropped to 9-8.

Paul Spinn (1-1) was the winning pitcher for Sam Houston. Kellen Simmons (0-3) took the loss for the Panthers. Hunter Silva, Andrew Massey, Michael Hilliard and Daniel Nottebart threw for the Kats in relief.

Sam Houston struck early as third baseman Kevin Miller singled up the middle with the bases loaded to score two runs and Riley's single to left center brought in two more runners. The two hits gave the Kats a 4-0 first inning lead.

Center fielder Mark Hudson started the third inning reaching second on an error. After moving to third, Hudson stole home to give Sam Houston a 3-0 lead. Another RBI single by Riley put the Bearkats ahead 4-0 after three.

Prairie View got on the board in the top of the fourth thanks to a gound out RBI by designated hitter Sterling Smith and a two-run single by third baseman Evan Richard.

Andreas helped the Bearkats respond in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run single.

Sam Houston will return to Southland Conference action Friday when the Bearkats begin a three-game weekend series with the UTSA Roadrunners. Game times are 6:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Don Sanders Stadium.
