Houston - Cougar second baseman Chase Jensen went 4-for-5 at the plate including a three-run homer and a two-run double as the University of Houston handed Sam Houston State a 12-2 non-conference baseball loss Tuesday night.

The start of the game was delayed an hour by wet grounds as UH upped its season record to 7-9 and Sam Houston fell to 9-7.

Jensen got things started for the Cougars with his home run in the third inning to put Houston in front 3-0. The Cougs added nine more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Sam Houston picked up its only runs in the top of the ninth inning on a two-run single by Tim Redden that scored Luke Plucheck and Jordan Bunch.

The Cougars, who ended a five-game losing streak with the victory, totaled 13 hits. Sam Houston State chalked up 12 hits and had one error. The Bearkats left 10 runners on base.

Starter Michael Burchett was the losing pitcher, dropping to 1-1 for the year. The Bearkats used seven other pitchers in the game. Austin Pruitt (1-2) picked up his first victory on the mound four UH.

Third basaeman Ryan Farney led the Kats at the plate, going 3-for-4.

Sam Houston returns to Southland Conference action this weekend as the Bearkats head to Louisiana to face Nicholls State.
