MONROE, LA – Third baseman Seth Hammock went 3-for-4 at the plate including a solo home run to lead Sam Houston State to a 4-2 non-conference baseball victory over Louisiana-Monroe Friday night .
Jacob Howard spread four hits over five innings, striking out seven ULM batters to pick up his first victory of the 2008 season. Casey Springer pitched the final inning, striking out the last Monroe batter with runners on first and third to pick up the save.
The victory ups Sam Houston State’s record to 3-2. The game was an hour-and-a-half late starting due to a rain delay.
Hammock was involved in three of the Bearkats four runs. He singled in the first run for Sam Houston in the second inning, scoring Todd Sebek who got on base on an error.
Keith Stein walked, stole second, reached third on a sacrifice bunt, then scored the Bearkats’ second run in the third inning on a Bobby Verbick sacrifice fly.
The Kats scored their third run with two out in the fourth inning. Hammock singled, stole second base, reached third on a Ryan Trevino single, then scored on a single by ? Riley.
Hammock put the Bearkats up 4-2 with a solo home run in the sixth inning.
Sam Houston State and Louisiana-Monroe will play the second contest of their three game weekend series beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday.
