San Antonio, Tx - Third baseman Jessie Plumlee batted in five runs on a triple, double and a sacrifice fly to lead Sam Houston State to a 9-5 victory over UTSA Friday night in the first of a three-game Southland Conference baseball series.

The contest put Sam Houston head coach Mark Johnson two wins away from becoming the 16th active NCAA Division I baseball coach to post 1,000 career coaching victories. Johnson has compiled a 998-517-3 in 25 years of coaching at Texas A&M and SHSU.

Sam Houston (9-13 4-3 Southland) extended its winning streak to four games. The Bearkats' two top hitters, center fielder Mark Hudson and designated hitter Chris Andreas both went 2-for-5 each with a home run.

Starting pitcher Justin Jackson (1-0) struck out seven Roadrunners while spreading six hits over seven innings for the victory. Daniel Nottebart picked up the save with three innings in relief.

Sam Houston jumped out to a 6-0 lead as Plumlee brought in two runs with a triple in the second inning and two more with a two-run double in the third. Hudson's solo home run and an RBI single by Doug Oney accounted for the other two runs.

Plumlee's fifth RBI came on a sacrifice fly in the fifth that scored Andres. The designated hitter added a two-run homer in the sixth. Sam Houston totaled 13 hits in the game.

Sam Houston looks to start Paul Spinn in Saturday's 2 p.m. game. The third game of the series with begin at 1 p.m. Sunday.
