The victory gives the Bearkats a 2-0 lead in the series which will be concluded Sunday afternoon. Sam Houston (10-13 5-3 Southland), which now has won five games in a row, totaled 16 hits in Saturday's contest.
Sam Houston head coach Mark Johnson moved to with one win of becoming the 16th active NCAA Division I baseball coach to post 1,000 career coaching victories. Johnson has compiled a 999-517-3 in 25 years of coaching at Texas A&M and SHSU. He will be the 44th coach in NCAA Division I to total 1,000 career wins.
With the Kats trailing 4-1 in the top of the fifth inning, Hudson blasted a three-run home run to left field as SHSU jumped ahead 5-4. Hudson added a solo home run in the seventh. The junior posted his 14th multi-hit game of the season.
Second baseman Braeden Rily also went 4-for-5, scoring three runs for the Bearkats. Designated hitter Chris Andreas was 2-for-5 at the plate. Taylor Davis, Daniel Nottebart, Ryan Mooney and Doug Oney each had RBIs for Sam Houston.
Right-hander Matt Shelton (5-2) picked up the victory pitching four innings in relief. He allowed three hits and struck out two of the 19 batters he faced. Paul Spinn, the Bearkats' starter, struck out four batters while giving up seven hits in five innings.
Sam Houston looks to start Brent Power in Sunday's 1 p.m. game as the Bearkats look to pick up the sweep. Until Friday night's victory, SHSU had not won a Southland regular season game over UTSA since 2005. The Roadrunners swept the series each of the past four years.
