After being run-ruled 14-1 Friday night, Sam Houston bounced back to take the final two games of the series and up their record to 15-18 for the season and 8-7 in Southland Conference play.
A two-run single by Jared Wondra and another run-scoring single by Daniel Nottebart gave the Bearkats a 3-0 lead in the third inning and the three runs in the fourth put SHSU up 6-1.
McNeese rallied for two runs in the fifth inning but could come no closer as the Cowboys dropped to 18-13 for the year and 9-6 in league action.
Brent Powers (1-3) spread five Cowboy hits over five innings and struck out five batters to earn the victory on the mound. Matt Shelton and Brandon Kimbrel threw in relief with Kimbrel earning his first save of the season.
Zach Butler (1-3) was the losing pitcher as McNeese's starter.
Sam Houston State will play host to Rice in a non-conference game at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night at Don Sanders Stadium. Prior to the game, Sam Houston head coach Mark Johnson will be presented with a plaque in honor of the Bearkat skipper picking up his 1,000th career victory as a head coach last month.
