Waco - Sam Houston out hit Baylor Tuesday night but the Bears made their hits count as eight of the nine were extra base hits in a 9-5 non-conference baseball victory.

Sam Houston had 11 hits, two more than the Bears. But Baylor totaled four doubles, three triples and one home run. Right fielder Cal Towey posted an RBI double in the third inning and erased a 3-2 Sam Houston lead with a two-run triple in the fourth. Dan Evatt added a two-run home run in the fifth.

After giving up two runs in the bottom of the third inning, the Kats took a brief lead in the top of the fourth. Braeden Riley doubled and scored on a Chris Andreas triple. Andreas scored on a Bear error and Jared Wondra hit a solo homer to make the score 3-2.

Jessie Plumlee accounted for Sam Houston's fourth run in the eighth inning, hitting a double and scoring on a Daniel Nottebart single. Ryan Mooney's RBI single in the ninth put the Kats' fifth run on the board.

Baylor's pitching staff totaled 10 strike outs as relief hurler Jon Ringenberg (2-0) took the victory. Brandon Kimbrel started for Sam Houston. Paul Spinn (1-4) was the loser in relief. Justin Jackson, Matt Shelton and Nottebart all saw action in relief.

The Bears ended a three-game losing streak, upping their record to 22-14 for the year. The loss was the fifth in a row for Sam Houston. The Kats have dropped 10 of their last 13 games as they fell to 15-24 for the season.

Sam Houston hosts Nicholls in a critical weekend Southland series at Don Sanders Stadium that begins with a 6:30 p.m. game Friday.

Both Sam Houston and the Colonels are tied for eighth place in the Southland Conference standings and only eight teams qualify for the post-season tournament in Corpus Christi in May. Winning the series is key for the Kats' hopes to return to the tournament where Sam Houston is three-time defending champion.
