Freshman shortstop Corey Toups totaled two hits and drove in two runs to lead Sam Houston to an 8-1 non-conference baseball win over Prairie View A&M Tuesday night.

Burchett allowed only two hits in six innings, striking out three to pick up his first victory of the season. Andrew Godail, Michael Hilliard and Caleb Smith pitched in relief.

First baseman Anthony Azar started a three-run second inning for the Bearkats with a double to center field. The next three Bearkat batters, drew walks with Azar scoring on a free pass to second baseman Jessie Plumlee.

Shortstop Corey Toups singled to left field to bring in two more runs and give Sam Houston a 3-0 lead.

Designated hitter Ryan Farney, in his first start as a freshman, brought in another run for the Kats in the bottom of the fifth inning. Left fielder Luke Plucheck singled with two outs, then stole both second and third before scoring on a single to left by Farney.

Toups led off the sixth inning with a double, scoring on an infield error after a single by center fielder Colt Atwood. Azar brought in Atwood with a single. Right fielder Greg Olson and pinch runner Wyatt Powell scored on a pair of errors as Sam Houston jumped in front 8-0.

In the seventh, the Panthers loaded the bases with consecutive walks. Leftfielder Darry Johnson brought in a run with a single.
