Cody Dickson pitched a complete game one-hitter as the Bearkats beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 5-0 on the first day of Southland Play. Dickson tied a career high with 11 strikeouts.

The junior southpaw was completely dominant throughout the game and was perfect through 5 2/3 innings. Islander second baseman Cody Stephens singled just over second base to register their only hit of the game.

“Cody Dickson really just commanded the strike zone,” said Bearkat head coach David Pierce. “I’m proud of the way he competed tonight. That’s about as good as anyone can go out and pitch. He had big league stuff tonight.”

Dickson had nine strikeouts before allowing the first hit, including striking out the side in the fifth inning. He didn’t issue any free passes in the game.

Sam Houston got on the board in the first inning when designated hitter Hayden Simerly doubled to drive in catcher Anthony Azar. The Bearkats clung to the 1-0 lead until the sixth inning when they strung together three straight hits with two outs.

Shortstop Carter Burgess reached on a strikeout wild pitch and advanced to third when third baseman Kevin Miller singled sharply through the left side. Right fielder Romeo Cortina singled for his first Bearkat hit and RBI and Colt Atwood singled to clear the bases.

The Kats would add one more run in the seventh after right fielder Luke Plucheck led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Azar.

“When we talk about playing a complete game, that’s what we mean,” said Pierce. “We got exceptional pitching from Dickson and some timely hits.”

Trevor Foss started for the Islanders and pitched six innings allowing four runs on seven hits.

The Bearkats and Islanders will play game two of the weekend series at 4 p.m. Saturday at Don Sanders Stadium.
