Cody Dickson put together another solid start as the Bearkats squeaked out a 5-3 win over SFA. Dickson pitched seven innings allowing just three runs on four hits while striking out nine.

Sam Houston (14-11, 3-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after shortstop Carter Burgess hit a two-out triple and catcher Anthony Azar singled to drive him in.

The Lumberjacks (11-14, 2-2) scored in the bottom half of the first when shortstop Hunter Dozier blasted a two-run homerun over the left centerfield wall. Dickson struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning.

Second baseman Jessie Plumlee answered with his own long ball in the bottom of the third to tie the game up 2-2.

The Kats added to their lead in the fifth when they loaded the bases and forced the SFA starter out of the game. Third baseman Kevin Miller drove in a run when he hit into a fielder’s choice. SHSU loaded them back up and designated hitter Shea Pierce walked to drive in one more.

Anthony Azar drove in another run for the Bearkats in the sixth inning. Burgess again got a hit with two outs and scored when Azar doubled to make the score 5-2.

SFA’s Dozier led off the sixth with his second homer of the game to get SFA within two runs at 5-3. He finished the game 2-for-3 with two homers, two walks and three RBI.

Dickson followed up a one-hit shutout in his last start with a solid outing. He picked up his second straight win and is 4-2 on the season.

Miles Manning relieved Dickson to start the eighth inning. He was able to get Dozier out for the first time in the game, on a groundout to short. The freshman reliever got the first two outs of the ninth but then loaded the bases and was replaced by Michael Burchett.

Burchett got first baseman Max Lamantia to fly out to end the game and register his second save of the season.

Azar was 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Burgess was 2-for-5 with three runs scored. Plumlee and Miller were both 2-for-5 with one RBI.

Game two of the series is Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
