Freshman pitcher Sam Odom tossed six solid innings to lead the Sam Houston baseball team to a 7-1 win, completing the four-game sweep of Northern Colorado. The Bearkats will play a fifth straight game Tuesday at McNeese State at 6 p.m.

The Bearkats opened the scoring with a run in the second inning. Third baseman Carter Burgess singled before advancing to second on a balk and over to third on a passed ball. He scored on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Jake MacWilliam.

Northern Colorado knotted the game up 1-1 in the top of the fifth. The run was scored after a lelft fielder Nate Tanner singled and advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt and moved to third on a groundout. Shortstop Ryan Yamane singled to right field to drive in the run.

An infield single by center fielder Colt Atwood gave the Kats the lead right back in the bottom of the fifth.

A big sixth inning put the game away for SHSU. Right fielder Hayden Simerly started with a single and shortstop Jake MacWilliam had a one-out walk. Ryan O’Hearn came off the bench and crushed a double off the wall in left center to plate two runs.

Catcher Shea Pierce followed with a double of his own, scoring O’Hearn from second. Second baseman Ryan Farney and Atwood followed with RBI singles of their own to make the score 7-1.

Seth Holbert and Jordan Church each made their first pitching appearances of the season. Holbert tossed two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three. Church pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Sam Houston State returns to Don Sanders Stadium Friday for a three game series against Dallas Baptist University. Friday’s game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Saturday is at 4 p.m. and Sunday’s finale is at 1 p.m.
