HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats built up a comfortable early lead on their way to a 10-4 win over Incarnate Word in the series opener on Friday night at Don Sanders Stadium.
The Kats (11-4, 4-0 SLC) remained one of just two undefeated teams in SLC play by putting up a pair of four-run innings in the first three frames, building as much as a 9-0 lead before the end of the fourth inning.
SHSU took advantage of that big lead to hold starter Hayden Wesneski to just 78 pitches after he went 8.1 innings a week ago against HBU. The junior was still as efficient as could be on Friday, however, in moving to 3-0 on the year with three strikeouts and just one run allowed on five hits in 6.0 innings of work.
The Kats piled up 16 hits for the game and chased UIW starter Luke Taggart from the hill before the fifth inning after tagging him with nine runs on 12 hits in 4.0 innings. He fell to 2-3 on the season.
Five Bearkats finished with multi-hit games, led by a 3-for-4 day for Clayton Harp that included a double and two RBI. Gavin Johnson also had a double as part of his 2-for-4 game, adding three more RBI to his season total.
Colton Cowser scored four times and hit safely in each of his three official at-bats, while Hunter Hearn had two RBI and a pair of hits. Additionally, Jordan Cannon had an RBI and two hits of his own, while Reese Johnson had the other Bearkat RBI.
The Kats will look to secure the series with the Cardinals on Saturday at 3 p.m. at The Don.
