NACOGDOCHES – After being shut out in 21 of the first 22 innings of the series, Sam Houston State’s bats finally came alive in the third game as the Bearkats totaled 10 hits in a 9-2 victory over Stephen F. Austin Saturday afternoon at Jaycee Field.
Due to the threat of rain on Sunday, the two teams played a doubleheader Saturday. SFA won the first game 1-0 to take two of three contests in the Southland series. SFA now stands 21-25 for the season and 12-14 in SLC action. Sam Houston is 29-19 for the year and 15-12 in league play.
Sam Houston State exploded for two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings of the nightcap.
Seth Hammock doubled and Heath Pugh walked. With two out, singles by Adam DeLaGarza and Braeden Riley scored Hammock and Pugh on back-to-back plays.
Knight’s home run scored Jordan Bunch who walked to put the Bearkats up 4-1 after six innings. Daniel Nottebart added another run in the eighth with an RBI single.
Sam Houston scored four more runs in the top of the ninth inning.
Riley led the Kats at the plate in the second game, going three-for-five.
Starting Lumberjack pitcher Jared West (1-0) baffled the Bearkats for six innings, allowing only three hits and striking out two to earn the victory in the first game. Alex Moshier struck out two in two innings of relief and Richard Folmer picked up his 11th save of the season shutting down the Kats in the ninth frame.
Sam Houston State did not get a hit under center fielder Adam DeLaGarza doubled in the top of the fifth inning. Left fielder Nick Zaleski and right fielder Tyler Knight each posted singles in the sixth inning.
Third baseman Brian Ferguson provided the game winning RBI with a single to scored shortstop Tanner Hanes in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Jacob Howard (4-3), who threw his second complete game of the season, took the loss. Howard spread seven SFA hits over eight innings while striking out eight of the 31 batters he faced.
Sam Houston State plays Texas A&M Tuesday night in College Station.
