Both the Sam Houston men's and women's basketball teams tip off 2013 Southland Conference action Friday afternoon at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.

The Bearkats will play host to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first of more than a two-month schedule of league doubleheaders across Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

The SHSU women will hit the court first, tipping off at 1 p.m. against the Islanders. The Bearkats have played six consecutive road games, traveling as far away as California where the Kats were runners-up at the Long Beach State Classic.

Sam Houston ended the road swing with a 75-58 victory over Houston Baptist in Houston Wednesday night. In California, the women lost by one point in the tournament finals against host Long Beach State. The Kats' two top scorers, Britni Martin and Sequeena Thomas, both were named to the All-Tournament team.

Martin has scored in double figures in all 12 games this season including a season best of 25 points at UTEP. Thomas has a streak of 10 double figure scoring games and has posted both double figure points and rebounds seven times.

The Bearkat women ended pre-Southland action with a 4-8 record.

The Sam Houston State men  (7-5) will host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday at 3:30 p.m.

After a 1-3 start by the basketball Bearkats, Sam Houston has won six of their last eight games, including their last four contests. Three of the team's five losses have come against Arkansas, Indiana at Texas.

No player on the Sam Houston State roster is averaging in double figures but the Bearkats' attack certainly is balanced with six players averaging between 6.5 and 8.7 points per game. In Sam Houston's 12 non-conference games, the Bearkats have been led in scoring by eight different players.

Nine players have scored in double figures at least once. Sam Houston's bench averages 31.7 points per game. The Bearkats sit second in the conference in scoring defense allowing 61.2 points per game.

The Islander men have not won since opening the season with a 60-49 win over Texas Lutheran Nov. 10. Among the 10 consecutive losses are games against Houston, Iowa, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and to Stephen F. Austin in the first conference game of the season.
