Kaheem Ransom and Jabari Peters, who paired to lead Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kansas, to a 25-8 record this past season, have signed letters-of-intent to attend Sam Houston State University and play basketball for head coach Jason Hooten.

The Saints went 14-2 in 2013 to win the Jayhawk West Conference, Seward County’s third consecutive conference title. The 14 league victories were the most by a Jayhawk West team since 2002.

“We’re extremely excited to sign two quality young men like Kaheem and Jabari,” Hooten said. “They come from an outstanding program at Seward County and know what it takes to win.”

Ransom, a point guard from Wichita, Kansas, earned first team all-conference and all-region honors after averaging 16.1 points , 4.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists this season. He hit 62 3-point shots and posted a 35 percent shooting mark from beyond the arc.

He also received NJCAA All-America honorable mention honors and was a conference “player-of-the-week” selection six times in his two years as a Saint. He scored in double figures in 27 of 32 games.

The 10th player in school history to score more than 1,000 career points, Ransom has helped lead Seward County to a 56-15 record during the past two seasons that includes a third place finish at the NJCAA national tournament.

“Kaheem worked hard every single day,” Seward head coach Bryan Zollinger said. “He turned himself from a high school player who averaged eight points a game into one of the best players in Seward history.”

Peters is a 6-3 shooting guard who added 13.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists per contest to the Saints’ efforts this winter. He hit 48 3-pointers, posting a 34 percent three-point percentage, and scored in double figures in 25 games. On defense he was credited with 73 steals.

The Brooklyn, New York, product, who earned second team all-conference and all-region honors as a sophomore, played as a freshman at Texas Southern.

“Jabari was a difference maker on both sides of the floor for us,” Zollinger said. “He could score and was one of our defensive leaders.”

Ransom and Peters are the first two men’s basketball signings for Sam Houston State this spring.
