Ashton Mitchell from Sam Houston State is making a name for himself in European pro basketball.

The two-time All-Southland Conference point guard who played for the Bearkats from 2007 to 2010 just signed with Metalac Koteks Valjevo in Serbia according to the Eurobasket Data Center.

Mitchell started the season at BK Kolin in the NBL league in the Czech Republic where, in 30 games, the New Orleans native averaged 17.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 2.4 steals per game.

The 5-11, 175 Mitchell ranks as Sam Houston’s third all-time leader in assists (567) and stands No. 20 in Bearkat career scoring (1,104 points).

He was a first team All-Southland Conference selection after leading Sam Houston to the 2010 league championship and was the Most Valuable Player at the Southland tournament in Katy where the Kats earned their second trip to the NCAA Championships.

After graduation, Mitchell was the third pick overall in the D-League draft by the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

His first pro team in Europe as Liepaja Triobet in Latvia. Mitchell helped lead his team to the Latvian League semifinals in 2011 and was named to the Latvian League All-Defensive Team that season.

He played in 19 games in the Baltic League, averaging 14.0 points and 3.8 assists and 35 games in Latvian LBL were he scored 12.6 points per contest and averaged 3.9 assists.
