With her game-leading 19 points at Texas State in San Marcos Wednesday, junior forward Britni Martin became the 12 Sam Houston State women's basketball player to score more than 1,000 points during her Bearkat career.

The Conroe product has totaled 1,007 points in 74 games since 2009 for a 13.6 career scoring average.

This year Martin is the Bearkats' leading scorer with 220 points in 15 games for a 14.7 mean. She stands No. 3 in all-time three-point baskets (174) and No. 12 in career assists (252) at Sam Houston.

Martin is a preseason All-Southland Conference selection in 2012 after earning first team All-Southland recognition after helping lead the Bearkat women to the 2011 West Division Co-Championship.

The junior forward also was a first team Academic All-Southland Conference selection last winter with a 3.41 overall grade point average as a kinesiology major.

"Britni is a leader on and off the floor. She's a terrific athlete and a terrific person," Sam Houston head coach.

Martin ranks as one of the top performers in the Southland Conference again in 2012. She leads the Southland in free throw percentage (.831) and stands No. 6 in the league in scoring (14.7 points), No. 4 in both assists (3.7) and three-point field goals per game (2.0), No. 5 in assist/turnover ratio (1.5) and  No. 14 in steals (1.7).

Martin stands 103 points away from becoming one of the top 10 all-time leading scorers in Sam Houston women's basketball history. Sherry Pfister, who played for Sam Houston from 1980 to 1983, is the university's all-time leading scorer with 1,975 points and an 18.8 scoring average.

Next action for the Sam Houston State women will be a road game at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday night at 7 p.m.

The Bearkat women return home to Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum on Wednesday, January 25, when SHSU will play host to Stephen F. Austin at 6:30 p.m.
