Nacogdoches -- Four Sam Houston women scored in double figures to lead the Bearkats to a 70-55 victory over Stephen F. Austin Wednesday night.
Already assured of a berth in next week's Southland Conference post-season tournament in Katy, the Bearkats helped improve their seeding in the tournament with the win.
Sequeena Thomas pulled down a career high 21 rebounds and scored 11 points. The 21 rebounds mark the fourth highest single game total ever by a Bearkat women's player.
Also scoring in double figures were Britni Martin with 19 points, Jasmine Johnson with 12 and Chanice Smith with 10.
The victory upped Sam Houston's season record to 16-10. The Bearkats took over sole possession of first place in the Southland West Division. SHSU stands 11-4 in league play.
"I'm very proud of our performance tonight," head coach Brenda Nichols said. "We kept the intensity from beginning to end."
Porsha Roberts led Stephen F. Austin with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
During the first half, the lead changed hands nine games and Sam Houston held only a one point lead at halftime, 24-23.
The Bearkats came out of the locker room after intermission red hot, outscoring the Jacks 46-32 in the second period. Sam Houston hit 15-of-33 from the field in the second period (45.5 percent) while limiting SFA to just 31.3 percent shooting.
The Bearkats close out the regular season Saturday at 2 p.m. when Sam Houston play host to Texas State at 2 p.m. at Johnson Coliseum.
