Besides winning a second consecutive Southland Conference Western Division championships, earning their third league post-season tournament berth in a row and playing two exciting games in the Women's Basketball Invitational, the 2012 Bearkat women's basketball team has made its presence felt in the Huntsville community.

During the fall semester, the Bearkats participated in fall carnivals at Stewart and Sam Houston elementary schools and h4ld "Kat Chat" sessions with youngsters throughout the area. Head coach Brenda Nichols and Bearkat players Chanice Smith, Kaysean Clavelle and Angela Beadle were guest speakers at the Huntsville Lions' Club.

In January, the team held an academic pep Rally and "Chat Talk" at Huntsville Intermediate and assisted with the Huntsville Independent School District's "Carnival of Books" to encourage young readers.

In March, the squad helped with the City of Huntsville's dedication of the new basketball facility. The team also participated in physical fitness days at elementary schools. They made presentations at various schools to talk about respect and the importance of reading and writing and were part of the Sam Houston Elementary "Spring Fling" and TAKS "pep rally.

"One of the hallmarks of the Sam Houston women's basketball program is the team's commitment to making a positive impact on the Huntsville community," Bearkat head coach Brenda Nicholls said. "The girls get a tremendous kick out of working with the youngsters around the community and are serious about being role models for the kids. They talk to the youngsters about the important of respect for yourself and others and for achieving in school and building a future."
