The loss marked the Bearkats' first in league play as Sam Houston dropped to 3-1 in Southland Conference action and saw its four-game winning streak end.
Poor shooting was a key factor as the Kats shot just 25 percent from the floor, going 17-of-68.
"We just didn't bring our intensity tonight and it cost us," said head coach Brenda Nichols. "We didn't come out very well in the second half and it took us 10 minutes to score. You can't win games like that. We will take a look at this loss and then get ready for Corpus."
Britni Martin led Sam Houston with 19 points. Sequeena Thomas added 15 points and pulled down 18 rebounds. Martin and Thomas, however, combined to hit only 11 of 41 shots from the floor.
Angela Beadle added six points for Sam Houston State.
The Bearkats continue their Southland Conference road swing with a game Saturday night at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
