For the second year in a row, Sam Houston junior forwards Britni Martin and Sequeena Thomas have been named to the Academic All-Southland Conference women's basketball honor squad.

A first team selection of the 2012 honor squad, Martin sports a 3.45 overall grade point average as a kinesiology major. The Conroe product was first team All-Southland Conference performer after leading the Southland in three-point baskets per game (2.96) and ranking No. 3 in the league in scoring (17.2). She also finished the season with Southland stat rankings of No. 3 in three-point pct. (.386) & free throw pct. (.829).

Martin scored in double figures in 24 of 28 games this year including season best of 30 points vs. SFA. She was the leading scorer for SHSU in 17 games this season and now ranks No. 5 in all-time Sam Houston women's basketball scoring with 1,269 career points. Her 14.6 career scoring average is the third highest in school history.

Martin is a President's List student with perfect 4.00 GPA during 2011 fall semester. She was a  CoSIDA Academic All-America nominee and is active in the SHSU women's basketball team's community service efforts at Huntsville area elementary schools.

Thomas is a second team selection. The Allentown, Penn., product holds a 3.16 overall grade point average as a communications major. She was a second team All-Southland Conference performer, leading the  Southland Conference in rebound and ranking No. 2 in the nation with 12.6 average. Thomas stood No. 9 in Southland in scoring (14.8) and No. 2 in Southland blocked shots (2.0).

She totaled both double figure points and rebounds in 18 games, setting a school record and ranking No. 8 in NCAA double doubles. Thomas was the team's leading rebounder in 23 games in 2012 including season best of 21 in win over SFA, the fourth highest single game rebound total in school history. She is a Dean's List student ... active in SHSU women's basketball team's community service efforts at Huntsville area elementary schools

Other first team selections include McNeese State juniors Ashlyn Baggett and Caitlyn Baggett, Northwestern State senior Jordi James and Nicholls State sophomore KK Babin.

Second-team honorees include Thomas, Central Arkansas senior Marci Moffitt and junior Micah Rice, UT Arlington senior Bianca Sauls and Lamar graduate student Ang Green.

 

The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic advisors from each Southland Conference university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
