HUNTSVILLE – Senior Lydia Baxter recorded her third consecutive double-double but it wasn’t enough as the Sam Houston State women’s basketball team fell 73-62 to Oral Roberts, Friday night at Johnson Coliseum.
Baxter led the team with 16 points and a season-high 14 rebounds, as well as five steals. Three other Bearkats joined her in double-digits as Jaylonn Walker tallied 14 points, Amber Leggett racked up 11 and Jenniffer Oramas posted 10 points on the night.
Sam Houston started off strong defensively and held the Golden Eagles scoreless for nearly four minutes to open up the game. The first quarter was highlighted by four of Leggett’s 11 points as the quarter ended, 11-9, in favor of Sam Houston.
However, the Golden Eagles turned the tide in the second quarter in a 32-point effort to lead 41-22 heading into the break. Interrupted by just one Bearkat free throw, Oral Roberts went on a 17-1 run before La’Sha Haynes broke up the momentum with a jumper in the paint.
Leggett and Jaylonn Walker recorded back-to-back layups to snap seven straight Golden Eagle points, but Oral Roberts’ Lakota Beatty hit her fourth trey of the quarter to send the teams into halftime.
Baxter went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line to start the third quarter before two consecutive three-pointers by Jenniffer Oramas and Walker gave the Kats their first field goals of the quarter, seven minutes in.
After swapping a pair of field goals, Leggett and Walker combined for eight straight points to cut into Oral Roberts’ lead, 65-52, at the four-minute mark. The Bearkats clawed their way back and a layup from Haynes brought Sam Houston within nine points with just under one minute to go.
The Bearkat defense did not allow a single Golden Eagle field goal after the six-minute mark, but the Sam Houston offense could not make up ground and as the Bearkats fell to Oral Roberts, 73,62.
