HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bearkats started off slowly, not getting a bucket to go until the 6:31 mark of the opening quarter as the Huskies raced out to an 8-5 lead. But from there the Kats took over, upping the pace and the defensive intensity on their way to a 38-22 lead at the end of the opening half.

Sam Houston took control of things by closing the opening quarter on a 12-3 run in the final 3:38, scoring 10 in a row on the strength of four points each from Oramas and Walker.

They carried that over into the opening moments of the second quarter with another 10-0 run, capped by back-to-back 3-point baskets by Rachel Harrell on a great feed from Oramas and a stepback triple from Walker just 30 seconds later.

Maxwell would nearly have her double-double by the end of the half, going into the locker room with 10 points and nine boards a she played the full 20 minutes of the opening two quarters. The Kats hit 47.4 percent from the field in the second quarter to build up the lead to as much as 19 late in the second quarter before taking the 16-point lead to the break.

HBU came out with a chip on its shoulder in the third quarter, however, and behind nine points from Sophie Taylor had the Bearkat lead down to single digits at the midway point of the quarter. The advantage would get as low as seven, but no further, thanks in part to the second of Harrell’s three triples that put the lead back into double figures for good. SHSU would go on to close out the quarter on an 8-2 run and take a 61-45 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The lead continued to grow for the Kats in the fourth, eventually getting to as much as 23 at the 3:35 mark of the quarter thanks to SHSU going 6-for-7 at the charity stripe. HBU managed to score the final 12 points of the game and hit seven of their 11 field goals in the quarter, but the majority came after the game was already decided.
