Houston – The Sam Houston State Bearkats competed in Houston for the second consecutive week as they participated in the Howie Ryan Invitational at the Yeoman Fieldhouse on Friday.

One of the standout athletes of the event was Clayton Fritsch, the sophomore competed in the pole vault event and broke a school record. Fritsch recorded a jump of 18’ 2” which is a new indoor school record and the highest any student at Sam Houston has ever jumped under any conditions. That mark is good for 11th in the country and 35th in the world.

The women’s team was highlighted by senior Tristyn Allen. She competed in the triple jump and recorded a jump of 42’ 8.5” which is good for second best indoor triple jump in the school’s history. Allen now holds the number one and number two spots in the Bearkats history in the triple jump.

Coming off a competition that saw him break school records Chris Jefferson had another stellar day. The senior competed in the 60-meter dash and clocked in a time of 6.70. That time was his second-best finish of the season, behind only his school-record 6.65 that was set during the Texas Tech Open.

Sophomore Joe Austin III and freshman Myriq Freeman finished first and second respectively in the 800-meter race. Austin III finished the race with a time of 1:55.29 which is the best time he has recorded in the event so far.
