Brad Hagen, who has coached Sam Houston State's women's bowling team to a pair of top 10 NCAA Division I national rankings in 2011 and 2012, has been named to Bowlers Journal International's 7th annual 100 Top Coaches list.

Bowlers Journal International (BJI) began its annual list of the top 100 bowling coaches in 2006.

"No sport survives and thrives without a core of qualified men and women who can teach the basics to beginners and the intricacies to advanced players," BJI's 2012 Top 100 Coaches article said.  The magazine's editorial staff annually gives recognition to coaches from the youth bowling ranks to the professional level.

Hagen was hired in by Sam Houston State three years ago to begin women's bowling as the university's 17th NCAA Division I intercollegiate sport.

The Bearkats became the first inaugural program to earn a berth in the NCAA Elite Eight in its first season in 2010-11, ending the season ranked No. 8 nationally. The squad stood No. 9 in the 2012 final rankings.

Sam Houston State has compiled a record of 150 victories and 76 losses in intercollegiate competition in its first two seasons of action. Bearkats have earned All-America recognition three times and earned national All-Academic honors six times.

While 12 members of the BJI 100 Top Coaches list are from Texas, Hagen is the only college women's bowling coach from Texas so honored.

"Having one of our coaches honored by a national publication as one of the top 100 coaches at all levels in the profession is indeed a special honor for Sam Houston State," Bearkat director of athletics Bobby Williams said. "Our congratulations go to Brad on this outstanding achievement."
