Shreveport, La. - Both the Sam Houston men's and women's cross country squads brought back first place team trophies from the Centenary Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning.

Led by Karl Schreider, Clint Anders, Freedy Arellano and Logan Terry who all placed among the top 10 individuals, the men's team posted 36 points, finishing 29 points ahead of runner-up Houston Baptist.  Twelve teams competed in the men's race.

Alyssa Dooley, Victoria Gemeny and Sara Collazos placed first, second and third as the women rolled to victory as well.

The Bearkat women finished 31 points ahead of their closest competition in a nine-team field.

"I was really pleased with the way the men ran again as a group." Sam Houston distance coach Jesse Parker said. "At three miles we had a 24-second split between our #1 and #5 runners and we were able to maintain that through 5-miles, where we finished with a 37-second split. This was also a seasonal best for all of the guys."

Schreider led the Bearkat men with a fourth place 26:14 time. Anders was fifth with a 26:19, Areliano sixth 26:24 and Terry ninth 26:40.

"I was especially pleased with how junior Clint Anders ran," Parker said. "He has probably been having the best workouts of all the guys, but hasn't been able to put it all together in a race. He ran smart, looked strong and moved up well in the last 2-miles. It was refreshing for both him and I for him to run as well as he did."

Dooley's race winning time was 22:22 to lead the women. Gemeny clocked in at 23:00 and Collazos ran the course in 23:03.

"Our top three women ran exceptionally well," Parker said. "They took an early lead in the race and ran as a group. I was a little worried at first, but they continued to run strong and finished very well. Haleigh Ceballos also ran very well and was our #4 runner. She resisted the urge to get out to a fast start and I think it really paid off with the way she ran the final mile of the race. She's learning with every race and I expect she'll continue to show good improvement during the coming month."

Ceballos placed eight with a time of 24:10 and Sarah Pena was ninth at 24:10

"We have had a few injuries and we are lacking in the quality depth I would like to have," Parker said. "It's going to be important that we stay healthy these final two weeks in our prep for conference and we are all going to need to peak at the right time. But things have been going very well the past 6-weeks in training and I'm confident we'll be ready to run our best on October 31st. All the athletes seem to be confident, hungry and focused on running well in two weeks."
