HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Members of the Sam Houston State Student Athlete Advisory Council got into the holiday spirit on Wednesday, making a stop at Huntsville’s Scott Johnson Elementary School to drop off school supplies for local students.
The Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) is comprised of representatives from all sports in Bearkat Athletics and is a group who initiates community service efforts throughout the year.
In addition to SAAC, other representatives from all other Bearkat sports contributed to the donation efforts. The group dropped off supplies such as round-edge scissors, pencils, paper, folders, notebooks, Kleenex and other assorted items for student use throughout the school year.
“It’s rewarding when you do things such as this because you are not just an adult to these kids, but also a mentor,” senior soccer player Jordan Jarzombek said. “Showing the kids that things are not all bad in the world and that there are positive examples to look at is something important that we can do.”
Jarzombek, who has been affiliated with SAAC since her freshman season at Sam Houston, was one of the organizers of the effort. This year SAAC has contributed to blood drives, food pantries and other initiatives in the area as an effort of giving back.
Sam Houston SAAC has contributed to local school-supply drives for the last 10 years, receiving a list of supplies needed to replenish the classroom and help those children who do not have the resources to make it through the year. At Johnson Elementary, SAAC not only brought school supplies, but also took some time to interact with the students and faculty at the school.
“It’s heartwarming to see a smile on a kid’s face that you don’t even know, or know what they are going through in their lives,” Jarzombek said. “We want to show the kids, and the Huntsville community that Bearkat Athletics has a bigger presence than just what you see on the field”
