In the opening tournament of 2019, the Sam Houston State bowlers got off to a good start. The Bearkats posted an 11-2 record and took 5thplace at the Mid-Winter Invitational hosted by Arkansas State.
The Bearkats entered Sunday’s bracket play as the No. 5 seed and took a tough loss to UAB in the first round. They rallied with a win against Louisiana Tech, and then got a little revenge knocking off UAB in the fifth-place match.
“Despite a tough loss out of the gate, today was our best day of the event,” said head coach Brad Hagen. “We continued to get a little better each day over the weekend and that’s all a coach can ask for.”
Madysen Keller was named to the all-tournament team after posting a 208 average on Saturday to rank fifth in the individual standings.
In the opening match of the day against UAB, the match went the distance, with the Kats falling in the seventh game 212-195. In the second round against Louisiana Tech, they took care of business early, winning the first three games, posting scores of better than 200 in all three games. They closed out the match in five games to set up the rematch with UAB.
In the fifth-place match, the Kats dropped the opening game, but rallied back to win the next four by an average of 35 pins each game.
“Today’s overall performance showed we have a lot of potential and depth on this team,” Hagen said. “We’re in a regrowth period but Our mission is to keep growing, getting better each day, and each event knowing it’ll pay dividends.”
The Kats will be back in action this weekend when they head to Pennsylvania for the Kutztown Invitational.
