BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Sam Houston State bowling team opened the first day of the NCAA Women's Bowling Championship going 1-4 in the qualifying round.

Madysen Keller is fourth overall in the individual standings with a five-game average of 216.6. Her high game was in the opener against Vanderbilt and she topped the 200 mark three times. Her 256 was the fourth-best individual game of the day.

Match 1 vs No. 5 Vanderbilt (Loss, 984-955)

Madysen Keller opened the Championship with a 256 as Sam Houston fell to No. 5 Vanderbilt in the opener. Keller opened with a pair of strikes and then had a run of six straight from the fourth to the ninth frames.

Freshman Lynne Fishler was the only other Bearkat bowler to top 200 with a 201 game that included three straight strikes from the fourth to the sixth frames.

After a slow start the Kats made a charge in the fifth and sixth frames, opening each with four strikes.

Match 2 vs No. 1 Nebraska (Loss, 1147-994)

The Bearkats ran up against a hot Nebraska team in the second match of the day, falling by 153 pins to the top ranked team in the country.

Madysen Keller once again led the way for the Bearkats bowling a 221 after striking in three straight in frames 6-8 and opened the 10th with 2 strikes. Heather Penatzer was also above 200 with a 202. 

Match 3 vs No. 6 FDU (Loss, 987-961)

The Bearkats fell to No. 6 FDU to drop to 0-3 on the day. Neither team was able to manage any separation as the lead was never more 30 pins. The Kats just couldn’t get the big shots when they needed them.

Taryn Gray got her first start of the day after entering as a sub against Nebraska. She opened with four strikes in the first five frames and finished with a team high 196.


Match 4 vs No 2 McKendree (Loss 1053-958)


Madysen Keller continued her strong play through the first four matches, finishing with a 219 to lead the Bearkats in a loss McKendree. She rolled six straight strikes from the second to the seventh frames.

Stephanie Zavala had her first game above 200, finishing with a 203 after opening with three strikes to start the match.


Match 5 vs UMES (Win 973-902)

The Bearkats closed the first day of the NCAA Championship with a win over No. 8 Maryland Eastern Shore to close out the first day 1-4.

Three Bearkats cracked the 200 mark with Heather Penatzer leading the way with a 218, her best game of the day. Janine Kuwahara also had her best game of the day, rolling a 206. Stephanie Zavala closed with 202 for her second straight 200 game.
