BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Sam Houston bowling team recovered from a rough start to their Friday by knocking off Fairleigh Dickenson to remain alive at the NCAA Women’s Bowling Championships.

After dropping both qualifying matches in the morning session, the Kats entered the double-elimination bracket round as the No. 8 seed. They dropped their opening match to top-seed McKendree to set up a must-win match up against FDU.

The two teams split the opening two games, before the Kats were able to pull away, winning the next three to claim the 4-1 victory in the best-of-seven match.

“We just need to stay true to who we were as a team,” said head coach Brad Hagen. “We were able to string some strikes together at the right times and we avoided the big mistakes. That what you have to do when you are competing at this level.”

The Bearkats will face Arkansas State in another elimination match on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. They will have to win three matches in the early session to advance to Saturday night’s championship match.
