HUNTSVILLE – After another successful season on the lanes, expectations are once again high for the Sam Houston women’s bowling team. The Kats were voted as the No. 5 team in the country in the preseason coaches poll.
The Kats, who advanced to their third national semifinal appearance in the last four years, return five bowlers from last season’s squad.
In addition to the six trips to the NCAA Finals in the last seven years, the Bearkats have also been a regular in the top 25 poll. Sam Houston has been ranked in the top 25 of the National Tenpins Coaches Association poll since the start of the program in 2010.
They have also been ranked in the top 5 since the second poll of last season after appearing in the 2016 preseason poll as the No. 6 team in the country. The Bearkats have not appeared outside the top 10 of the NTCA poll since the preseason poll of the inaugural season.
Head Coach Brad Hagen on staying in the national championship picture every season:
“Continuing to stay competitively relevant with new faces and personalities year in and out is always challenging, demanding, and exciting. At the end of the day we all have jobs we have to do and standards to strive for and that never changes.”
On this year’s team:
“This is the youngest we've been since our inception but the amount of talent and potential depth is endless. Building consistency and momentum is key early while we establish lineups and continue to develop position players. If we continue to make those things happen, develop, mature, & grow together, the season will be another exciting one.”
