The Bearkat Bowlers stand is first place after the first day of the SFA Ladyjack Hammer Classic in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
The Kat posted a 3-1 record and lead in the overall standings by 11 pins over Vanderbilt. The top five teams after the first five games of Baker matches are separated by just 30 pins.
“We had a solid consistent day overall,” said head coach Brad Hagen. “Just ran into a buzz saw against UWW and a demanding left lane but we maintained our composure throughout the day.”
The Kats opened with a bye in the first match of the day before a 250 pin win over Marian University. After dropping a match to Wisconsin Whitewater, the Kats closed with wins over Nebraska and Arkansas State.
Against the No. 4 ranked Cornhuskers, the Bearkats were able to come from behind, turning a 63-pin deficit after two games into a 94-pin victory. Against No. 6 Arkansas State, the Kats jumped out early and never looked back, taking the match 1016-937.
The Kats will bowl five traditional matches on Saturday, opening up with No. 23 Youngstown State. They will also face No. 2 McKendree and No. 14 Tulane.
“Saturday’s have been giving us fits this season,” Hagen said. “We need to come out and have a good day and build off the strong finish we had today.”
