On the opening day of the Kutztown Invitational, the Sam Houston Bearkats posted a 4-1 record and currently sit in 7th in the 28 team field.
After dropping the first match of the day by 14 pins to Maryland Eastern Shore, the Bearkats improved as the day went on, winning their last four matches, including a 127-pin win over Adelphia in the final match of the day.
“Our last three sets were huge and ending on a high note in a tough match against a quality opponent is great for momentum and one we needed to have moving forward,” said head coach Brad Hagen. “We just made too many self-inflicted mistakes the first set of the day. Once we got comfortable especially with the lanes and our shapes we caught up to the scoring pace.”
The Kats finished the day with wins over Duquesne University, St. Francis College – Brooklyn, Chestnut Hill College and then Adelphi University.
Saturday's traditional matches begin at 8:30 a.m., and Sunday's best-of-seven bracket-style matches begin at 7:30 a.m. The Bearkats have some work to do to get into the top four spots and have a chance for the tournament title. The Kats trail leaders McKendree by 247 pins but are only out of the top four by 61 pins.
“There are a lot of teams bunched together fighting for one of the top four spots,” Hagen said. “If we go out and continue to bowl the way we finished the day today we should put ourselves right in the title mix.”
