ARLINGTON – Competing in the best tournament of the year, the Sam Houston bowlers are off to a great start. Sam Houston went unbeaten on the first day of the Prairie View A&M Invitational and sit in second place.
The Kats notched wins over three top 10 teams in the 12-team event that features all ranked opponents. The tournament is being held at the International Training and Research Center, home of the National Bowling Hall of Fame. They trail Arkansas State by 39 pins and are 125 pins up on third place Sacred Heart.
“Anytime you can go undefeated in a single day with 3 top 10 wins and all 5 in the top 20 its a great day,” said head coach Brad Hagen. “This team is deep and talented and we just need to keep focusing on us and what we can control.”
The Kats got the day started on a high note, knocking off No. 1 Nebraska by 38 pins. They followed that with a win over North Carolina A&T and then beat rival SFA by 20 pins. Their best game of the day was a 1,117 pin performance against Vanderbilt in a 110 pin victory. The Kats closed strong with a win over Sacred Heart.
“We did a great job with keeping the ball in play, great communication, and staying a head of the transition,” Hagen said. Once the pattern blended out and we could open our angles a little more we really had a great look and it was all about trust and execution. Today was a great start and the momentum we needed to carry through the weekend.”
The Bearkats will continue action at the ITRC Saturday, highlighted by a match against defending national champion McKendree.
