HOUSTON – The Sam Houston State cross country teams kicked off the 2019 season on Friday night at the 44th Annual Rice Invitational.
The men’s team finished eighth in the 10-team field, while the women’s team came in seventh out of eight squads.
Andrew Bosquez was the men’s top finisher, coming in 29th (20:37.67) while Austin Zirkel was two spots behind with a time of 20:40.45. The Kats also got a strong finish from Sergio Armendariz in 36th place (20:45.17).
Other finishers included Jonathan Loebl in 57th place (21:49.23), Brendan Gilbert in 69th place (22:11.50) and Leo Michel in 78th (23:18.86).
On the women’s side, Rebeca Gonzalez was the top finisher in 27th place (14:58.82) with Sandy Clarkin behind her in 40th (15:31.62). Macie Martinez was on her heels in 42nd place (15:36.40) and Monique Spruill finished in 44th (15:44.88).
Other finishers included Haley Thomas in 52nd place (16:09.63) and Haley Garza 59th (16:54.07).
They will next compete on October 5 in the Chile Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
