HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State cross country has announced its three-meet regular season schedule, with each competition keeping the Bearkats in East Texas.
The squad opens its season three weeks from Friday at the 42nd Annual Norry Hersey Rice Invitational Cross Country Meet on the campus of Rice University in Houston. The Bearkat women will run the 4,000 meters at 6:15 p.m. followed by the men’s 6,000 meters at 6:45 p.m.
The Kats close out their regular season with a pair of trips to College Station beginning with the Texas A&M Invitational on Sept. 23. Sam Houston returns two weeks later on Oct. 6 for the Aggie Open, with both competitions taking place at the Watts Cross Country Course.
"We have a very simple schedule this coming season,” head coach Jesse Parker said. “This will allow our young roster to focus on training and building fitness each week, rather than worry about regular season races. I expect this to help improve our performances at the conference championships, which is our primary goal.
“Having said that, we are excited about getting a chance to compete on three different occasions on one of the best cross country courses in the country when we go to College Station in October and again for the NCAA Regional Championships in November.”
Sam Houston looks to replicate its success from a season ago at the Southland Conference Championships, hosted by Abilene Christian on Oct. 26. A season ago, the women matched their best finish in program history in second while the men placed fifth.
The NCAA South Central Regional Championships will take place in College Station on Nov. 10. Last year, Chris Speaks and Ana Moreno represented the program at the event, held in Fayetteville, Ark. The NCAA Championships are Nov. 18 in Louisville, Kentucky.
