HUNTSVILLE – After 30 years of serving as the color commentator for Sam Houston State football and basketball on KSAM 101.7 RADIO, Leroy Wilkinson is retiring from his post, HEH Communications announced this week.
Wilkinson, a graduate of Sam Houston and former Bearkat baseball player, has been a mainstay with the university for nearly half-a-century and in 1999 received the SH Alumni Association Service Award for his work in the booth and service to the school.
“Leroy is a Bearkat through-and-through and has been a great ambassador for our university and athletic teams since his playing days and throughout his time in the booth and community,” director of athletics Bobby Williams said. “I am proud to call him a friend and wish him best of luck in the next part of his life.”
In his place, KSAM General Manager Steve Everett recently announced the hiring of E.P. Garth, who will serve as color commentator when the Sam Houston football season begins on Aug. 27 at Bowers Stadium against Richmond.
Garth has two decades of experience in play-by-play and color commentating in Texas high schools as well as at the college level. Among his broadcasting experience includes stints with Baylor basketball as well as football sideline reporting for TCU and Tarleton State.
Garth, an AP Texas History teacher with Waco ISD, has also has spent time in the Southland Conference, serving as play-by-play for Northwestern State football and women’s basketball.
“It is our privilege to be the voice of Sam Houston athletics and although we will miss the passionate enthusiasm of Leroy Wilkinson on the air, we will still bring a quality broadcast team to each and every game of the football and basketball season,” Everett said. “Wherever the Sam Houston Bearkats go to play, we’ll be with them and sharing every moment with you on KSAM Radio.”
