HUNTSVILLE – Bearkat student-athletes put in their fair share of work both on and off the fields of play and the classroom, but they received guidance in their preparation for life after Sam Houston recently at Enterprise Holdings’ presentation on career skills.

Nearly 130 student-athletes were in attendance to listen to Jamie Barry and Sterling Hardin Jr. from Enterprise Holdings discuss how to take the skills obtained during their time at Sam Houston into the professional world. It is the ninth time in the past 10 years that Enterprise has joined forces with Sam Houston State Athletics to put on this presenation.

A Sam Houston graduate herself, Barry is a talent acquisition specialist for Enterprise Holdings in Houston while Hardin is a sales executive in Spring who understands the rigors of being a student-athlete after playing running back at Southeast Missouri State.

During the presentation they spent time speaking to the student-athletes about resumes, dress, body language, interview skills and how experiences from intercollegiate athletics can help them land a job in the professional world.

Each emphasized the importance of professionalism in each aspect of the job-finding process, in addition to both preparation and punctuality for an interview. The student-athletes were also provided a forum to ask questions of the presenters and had the opportunity to participate in a variation of exercises that included a step-by-step process on how to tie a necktie.

Enterprise Holdings also supports the Sam Houston Athletic Department with annual financial contributions to aid in Sam Houston athletics’ goal of “Building Champions.” Academic services, strength & conditioning, and training/medical treatment are an important part of the team. Alumni, friends and fans join the team too by becoming a Bearkat Champion.

Building Champions results in more than winning games, it involves creating well-rounded student-athletes. To do this, academic resources such as the Enterprise Job Skill presentation are necessary to assist them accomplish their goals in the classroom and in life.
