Sam Houston State Director of Athletics Bobby Williams has announced the promotion of two longtime administrators to senior leadership roles.

Chris Thompson has been named Senior Associate Athletic Director of Student Services and Greg Hinze is Senior Athletic Director of Operations. Thompson has been with the Bearkat athletic department in different roles for more than 35 years, and Hinze is in his second stint at Sam Houston State with close to 20 years in combined service time.

“Chris, Greg and I have been working together for a long time as a senior leadership group,” Williams said. “They have done an outstanding job promoting this department. I appreciate all the hard work they have put in to build this department into what it is today and keep us moving forward in a successful direction.”

A Sam Houston State tennis letterwinner and graduate as well a member of the athletic department staff as a coach or an administrator since 1981, Thompson has given more than three decades of service to the university.

Her areas of responsibility include student-athlete welfare; eligibility certification; student-athlete affairs course instruction; liaison with the SHSU student-athlete advisory committee; FAR/Athletic Advisory Council; SHSU Lettermen’s and Women’s Letter-Winner Associations, Title IX coordinator and oversees NCAA Compliance and APR.

In November of 2015, Thompson was selected to receive the 2016 Regents’ Staff Member Award by the Board of Regents of The Texas State University System. The regents annually select an exceptional staff member from one of the eight component institutions in the system to receive the award.

The award recognizes staff who excel in six areas: commitment to the university and its mission; job competency; collegiality; duration of service; community involvement; and exceptional achievement.

Hinze first came to Sam Houston has head track and field coach, serving five seasons from 1998-2003. He left coaching to become SHSU's assistant athletic director for marketing and operations.

From 2005 to 2007, Hinze served as athletic director at Blinn College. He returned to Sam Houston as the University's associate athletic director July 16, 2007.

He oversees internal and game operations, major facility programs, and NCAA and Southland Conference postseason for the department.

“I appreciate the confidence that Bobby has shown by providing me with this promotion,” Hinze said. “I look forward to continuing to try to work through the wide variety of challenges we collectively face and make the solutions as smooth as possible.”

As Bearkat track and field head coach Hinze twice was named Southland Conference Coach of the Year (men's track and field, 2003, and women's cross country, 2000).
