The Sam Houston State women went wire-to-wire to claim the team title at the Islander Classic on Tuesday afternoon in Corpus Christi. Heather Shake, earned the individual title as well after shooting a 76 to win by three strokes.

The Kats held a nine-stroke lead over Dallas Baptist, the top-ranked Division II team in the country, heading into Tuesday’s final round. Each team shot matching 310’s on Tuesday playing in very tough conditions.

“The wind blew hard today and that really tested the patience of all the players,” said women’s golf coach Tommy Chain. “Even though a lot of shots were blown off line the girls were able to persevere and get the win.”

Shake, who entered the day in second, two strokes off the lead, finished the tournament with a 220, 4-over par. Hannah Alberto moved up two spots to finish in a tie for second at 223 for the tournament.

“Heather and Hannah are off to a really good start for us,” Chain said. “Their play has been solid and everyone is starting to come around.”

Jenna Phillips finished in a tie for 14th shooting 230 for the tournament. Gianti Mahardhika was in the top 20 as well, shooting 233 and placing 20th.
